JOHOR BARU: Special task force police detained two snatch theft suspects in cases involving pregnant mothers.

In Batu Pahat, a 26-year-old unemployed man was picked up Wednesday in connection with the death of Jamilah Selamat, who was two months pregnant, on Sunday.

Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Amer Awal said the man was picked up at a housing area in Batu Pahat at about 10.30pm.

“He tried to flee and had a scuffle with policemen.

“He sustained light injuries and received outpatient treatment at Batu Pahat Hospital,” he said adding that the suspect had been remanded until May 13.

Jamilah, 31, hit her head on a pavement after she fell off her motorcycle. She went into a coma and died three days later at Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

SAC II Amer said police would determine whether the suspect was the pillion rider who pulled Jamilah’s handbag causing her to fall.

“The suspect was previously convicted for snatch theft, robbery and house breaking cases,” he said in a statement here.

He added that the suspect was detained while riding a stolen motorcycle.

“The motorcycle was reported stolen in Simpang Renggam earlier this year. The arrest would not have been possible without the public’s cooperation,” he said.

SAC II Amer urged anyone with information to contact the police hotline at 07-2212999 or the nearest police station.

In Kelantan, a 25-year-old lorry driver was picked up following the death of 33-year-old Saripah Mohd Nor, who was four months pregnant, on Wednesday.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the man was arrested at his home in Kampung Padang Mahligai in Bachok at about 1.30am Thursday.

Saripah, a mother of five, fell off her motorcycle after her bag was snatched in Melor. She was hit by an oncoming car in the 10.50am incident.
